ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participate in the SCDE SC Reading Coach Institute (Reading Coach Professional Development Series) or an SCDE- approved alternative coach program. See requirements for SCDE-approved coach programs in section VI. During the series, participants will (but are not limited to)
  • attend all monthly sessions;
  • attend all virtual meeting training sessions;
  • meet monthly with administration to discuss progress (review data), issues, and concerns
  • Assisty with the development of the school's Reading Plan
  • Model effective instructional strategies for teachers by working weekly with students in whole/small groups or individually.
  • Facilitate study groups. Helps lead and support reading leadership teams.
  • Train teachers in data analysis and the use of data to differentiate instruction.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled and unscheduled observations and provides feedback to teachers. Conducts regularly scheduled conferences with teachers to provide opportunities for reflection and problem solving.
  • Reviews lesson design, planning and pacing. Assists with long range, short range and daily lesson plans. Models and team teach lessons as needed.
  • Assists teachers in establishing classroom management procedures and creating a positive environment to enhance literacy and reading. Confers with teachers prior to parent conferences as needed.
  • Serves as a content resource for teachers; ensures that content is accurate and appropriate. Assists with materials and resources as needed.
  • Assess professional growth on a regular basis to ensure that teachers are experiencing success. Plans and participates in teacher professional development held throughout the year.
  • Coaches and mentor colleagues in instructional practices, student feedback, student assessment and teacher reflection.
  • Provide daily support to classroom teachers.
  • Work with teachers to ensure that research-based reading strategies are implemented with fidelity.
  • Help lead and support reading leadership teams at his or her school.
  • Work with all teachers (content teachers and elective areas) in the school he or she serves, prioritizing time for those teachers, activities, and roles that will have the greatest impact on student achievement, namely coaching and mentoring in classrooms.
  • Attends various meetings and professional development activities on district initiatives to meet the needs of teachers in improving reading achievement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, holds SC certification in Elementary and/or Early Childhood or an appropriate area of Special Education and an add-on certification for literacy coach; or
  • Holds a bachelor’s degree or higher, holds SC certification in Elementary and/or Early Childhood or an appropriate area of Special Education , and is enrolled and actively participating in the SCDE Literacy Leader Institute or is actively pursuing the literacy coach endorsement by enrollment in an SCDE approved program; or
  • Holds a master’s degree or higher, holds SC certification in Elementary and/or Early Childhood or an appropriate area of Special Education and Reading or a closely-related field and is pursuing the requiring qualifications in coaching
JOB REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge :

Knowledge of best practices in reading and literacy initiatives, programs, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of instructional programs and practices designed to meet educational objectives and requirements. Knows how to keep abreast of changes in policy, standards, procedures, and regulations pertinent to job functions. Knowledge in the application of classroom instruction and teaching of reading; knowledge of techniques used in motivating students and maintaining appropriate behavior. Knowledge in the methods for developing effective lesson plans, materials and classroom activities which stimulate learning. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and adjustment problems. Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities. Knowledge of the concepts of human growth and development and behavioral characteristics. Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Effective knowledge of modern office equipment such as computers, copiers, calculators, facsimile machines, etc. Knowledge of the proper maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Working knowledge of clerical functions such as typing, filing and sorting. Knowledge of the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of student and family information.

Skills/Effort :

Must be able to read, interpret, and apply various laws, policies, and procedures related to the operation of the district. Ability to effectively model and apply knowledge of district programs, services, and curricula to enhance reading and literacy instruction. Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, district staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job. Ability to complete, process, and maintain all required records, reports, and confidential information. Must possess advanced human relations, communications and interpersonal skills. Ability to provide instruction to others through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice. Ability to assist others in preparing lesson plans, tests, and instructional materials for classroom activities. Ability to coach others in supervising students and maintaining order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations. Skill in motivating students, and in communicating with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds. Ability to assist others in identifying student adjustment and/or academic problems; ability to provide counseling and/or make recommendations for appropriate remedial action. Ability to perform a variety of specialized tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and meet tight schedules and deadlines. Ability to operate general office equipment such as a computer, calculator, copier, etc.

Additional Physical, Cognitive, and Other Requirements :

Duties involve work in a school or office environment that includes standing, walking, and sedentary duties. Must be able to talk, read and hear, and effectively perceive and exchange information in a variety of oral, written and/or printed formats. Requires the ability to apply judgment and complex logic in defining problems, collecting information, and drawing valid conclusions. Must apply effective leadership principals in counseling, teaching, and instructing others. Duties require successful adaption to stressors, interpersonal conflicts, volatile situations, tight deadlines, etc. Must be able to record and exchange data, follow or deliver detailed verbal or written instructions, and make presentations to large groups. Duties require the ability to prepare and interpret complex records and reports, prepare correspondence, and enter data in correct form including proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Must possess the ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, determine decimals and percents, and apply statistical analysis. Must be able to compare and analyze information in numeric or symbolic form, and appropriately process color, depth and spatial relationships. Must have sufficient hand, eye and foot coordination to use or operate standard office equipment, items, and supplies. Duties of the job require routine keyboard operations and the frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment. Duties may involve the pushing, pulling and/or lifting of items weighing up to 10 pounds and the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis.

Working Conditions :

School or office environment with limited exposure to environmental conditions. Routine local travel required; occasional overnight travel required. Requires the ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require considerable attention and meeting deadlines.
