Are you passionate about the outdoors and ready to inspire the next generation of adventurers? The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking an energetic, driven, and outdoor-loving professional to join our team as an Admissions Counselor Outdoor Recreation .

This isn't your average desk job. In this unique, grant-funded ("soft money") role, you will combine your love for higher education with your passion for the outdoors. You will be the face of UMF for prospective first-year, transfer, and adult students, with a specialized focus on recruiting trailblazers who want to combine their college experience with outdoor recreation.

The Journey (Your Core Responsibilities)

As our Outdoor Recreation Admissions Counselor, you will manage your own recruitment territories across Maine, New England, and beyond, charting new paths where UMFs outdoor programs are a perfect fit.

  • Be the Guide: Educate and guide prospective students, parents, and high school counselors through the exciting college selection and admission process.
  • Blaze New Trails: Design, develop, and implement innovative marketing and recruitment strategies to increase awareness of UMF, especially among diverse and underrepresented student populations.
  • Connect & Collaborate: Work closely with UMF faculty, the OR (Outdoor Recreation) Department, and the OR Grant Manager to sync recruitment goals with our premier academic offerings.
  • Shape the Class: Evaluate student applications and play a direct role in making admission decisions.
  • Host the Experience: Help organize, execute, and bring the energy to on and off-campus events like Open Houses and Accepted Student Days.

What Youll Bring to the Trail (Qualifications)

We are looking for a collaborative team player who can connect authentically with students from all walks of life.

The Essentials (Required):

  • Education: A Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Passion: First-hand experience and a solid working knowledge of one or more areas of outdoor recreation.
  • Wanderlust: A strong desire and ability to travel extensively to meet students where they are.
  • Drive: A valid driver's license (based on UMS standards) to safely navigate recruitment territories and transport students during off-campus excursions.
  • Skills: Top-notch communication and public speaking skills, strong organization, and the ability to navigate modern technologies and CRM platforms.
  • Cultural Competency: A deep understanding of the unique challenges facing diverse populations and a commitment to advocating for students with marginalized identities.

Bonus Points (Preferred):

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in Admissions or closely related professional field.
  • Experience working with high school/college-bound students and families.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with various social media platforms.
  • Geographic management experience: recruitment, selection and yielding activities, including program and event management experience.

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the annual salary for this position is up to $45,300.32 plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents.
