Start Date : July 2026
Salary Range : Placement on the appropriate degree lane and salary step in accordance with Newtown Federation of Teachers contract plus an additional ten percent (10%) of their base salary.
Work Year : 197 days

Position Summary : The Dean of Students supports the principal and assistant principal in managing daily school operations, fostering a positive school culture, and ensuring academic success for all students. The Dean of Students serves as a bridge between students, staff, and families to ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.

The Dean of Students
  • Works closely with staff, administration, parents, and students in various types of situations.
  • Maintains student attendance procedures in conjunction with administration and works toward improvement of attendance in school and in classes.
  • Assists students and families who are experiencing barriers to successful school engagement and connects them to appropriate resources.
  • Communicates effectively and frequently with students, staff, families, and administration to review progress and results.
  • Partners with counselors, social workers, and other support staff to provide comprehensive assistance to students.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of school policies and procedures.
The Dean of Students must be able to :
  • Move about the school building to interact with students, as well as to attend meetings.
  • Operate and utilize technology and office equipment.
  • Work flexible hours including arriving early and staying late to monitor student arrival and dismissal and attending student activities and events.
  • Travel out-of-district periodically to attend workshops and meetings.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Competency in interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including students, staff, and families.
  • Cultural competency and commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of restorative practices, conflict resolution, and behavior management strategies.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Education and Experience:
  • Masters Degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in a public school setting.
  • Current Connecticut State Department of Education Teaching Certificate, 092 certification preferred.
