Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The mission of the Dean of Students Office is to initiate learner-centered programs and services that foster a culture of care conducive to academic and personal development.
Position Summary
The Associate Dean is the primary administrator for the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. The position leads 7 staff, who focus on crisis management and support, basic needs support, behavioral intervention, student conduct, and support for students who experience circumstances that could impact their ability to persist and succeed. The Associate Dean works closely with faculty and staff to support a campus-wide culture of care.
The Associate Dean will:
- Work in collaboration with faculty and other support services across campus to intervene with students whose behavior or personal well-being is impacting their academic success.
- Coordinate the crisis management process for students who have experienced severe distress
- Serve as a member of the University's crisis response network and the Behavioral Assessment Team.
- Work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate School, and International Programs Office on the Extraordinary Admissions process.
- Advise and counsel faculty, staff, students, and parents on confidential matters.
- Initiate and implement advocacy programs and services based on data-driven decisions.
- Lead strategic planning, assessment and reporting functions for the Dean of Students Office.
- Serve on university and division committees.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling or another appropriate field of graduate study.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of applicable professional experience including direct experience with crisis situations and serving in an advocacy role with college students in an institution of higher education.
- A record of increasingly complex work responsibility and adjudicating complex conduct cases
- A demonstrated understanding of student learning and development.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, crisis response, and conflict management skills.
- Must possess the ability to balance multiple obligations and remain professional and compassionate during emotionally charged situations.
- Must be able to work as an integral member of a supportive team.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications
- Successful service in a crisis and advocacy role for a campus community with a documented record of initiating proactive strategies that enhance retention and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment.

- Train, supervise, and evaluate professional/administrative staff and graduate students within the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
- Oversee the maintenance of all student advocacy, Extraordinary Admissions, academic integrity and conduct records.
- Oversee the completion of accreditation and compliance reports when necessary.
- Research and analyze data to identify student development trends and foresee challenges.
- Manage the unit's budget.
- Develop and evaluate office policies and standards.
- Coordinate and serve in the 24/7 on-call duty rotation for DOS/OSRR.

- Interact purposefully with students to address personal and academic problems, issues, and concerns.
- Oversee student services and the revision of student policies and procedures as well as compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
- Provide campus-wide leadership for the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
- Coordinate and serve in the 24/7 on-call duty rotation for DOS/OSRR.

Faculty/Staff Consultation
Essential Tasks
- Work collaboratively with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs as well as with faculty, staff, the Office of the Provost, University Police, and the Graduate School in achieving the strategic goals of the University.

Program Management
Essential Tasks
- Strategic planning, evaluation, and assessment of programs and services within the Dean of Students Office.
- Oversee the implementation of departmental initiatives, primarily for students, including interpreting policies and procedures, making referrals, and networking with campus and community partners to foster a culture of care.
- Fill in for the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students as needed.
