Job Description
14 Week Maternity Leave Position - *MOST LIKELY START DATE - 9/21/26*
The Academy of Notre Dame is seeking a compassionate, student-centered, and collaborative School Counselor to support students in Grades PreK-7 during a 14-week maternity leave coverage period starting in September 2026. This temporary position plays an important role in supporting the social, emotional, behavioral, and academic growth of all students while helping foster a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and joyful school community.
The ideal candidate brings warmth, flexibility, strong relationship-building skills, and a genuine passion for working with children across early childhood, elementary, and middle school grade levels. Candidates should hold a degree in School Counseling or a related field and have experience, including practicum experience, working in school settings or with children.
Position Responsibilities:
Student Support
Provide individual counseling check-ins and support for students' social, emotional, behavioral, and academic needs
Build trusting relationships that help students feel safe, heard, supported, and valued
Support students in developing coping strategies, emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills
Assist students with peer relationships, school adjustment, and conflict resolution
Small Group Counseling
Plan and facilitate small group counseling sessions focused on:
Social skills development
Organization and study skills
Emotional regulation and coping strategies
Friendship skills and conflict resolution
Additional identified student needs
Classroom SEL Instruction
Teach Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons across Grades K-7
Collaborate with teachers to support SEL implementation within classrooms and daily routines
Provide teachers with SEL resources, strategies, and classroom support
Help promote a positive and inclusive school culture
Collaboration & Communication
Partner closely with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and support student needs
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians through meetings, phone calls, and ongoing updates
Participate in student support meetings and team-based problem-solving discussions
Collaborate with outside agencies and providers to coordinate services and supports for students
Student Support Plans
Participate in and support the implementation of IEPs and 504 Plans
Support accommodations and interventions aligned with student support plans and school expectations
Attend team meetings, student support meetings, and related service discussions
